How to make an alphabet letter light


Light up your bedroom or sitting room by fabricating a letter that is lit up with light bulbs. An effect that is used in bars, shops, for weddings of for decoration.

What you will need:

  • A drill
  • A glue gun
  • A wood saw
  • A drill bit of the diameter of the base of the light bulbs
  • A ruler
  • A tape measure
  • Wood paint in two different colours
  • A brush
  • Wood screws
  • Zinc-plated steel seat brackets
  • A screw driver
  • A pencil
  • A piece of MDF, around 15mm thick.
  • Festoon lighting

Method:

  1. Start by tracing out an alphabet letter on the MDF and cut around. Source : deco.fr
  2. Measure the external sizes of the letter and cut sides, to a height of 12.5cm. Source : deco.fr
  3. Using a pencil, mark the future locations of the light bulbs. Grab the bit and drill a hole at each location. The drilling must be done on the spot and not on the wrong side so as not to leave a trace.
  4. In MDF off cuts, cut rectangular pieces about 8 x 4 cm. Their number must be equal to that of the light bulbs. Drill a hole in the middle of each piece with the drill bit, then cut in half in width. These elements will serve to keep the bulbs straight on the back of the letter.

  5.  Attach all the outside edges on the letter leaving the same depth on each side of the lamp. To do this, transfer the width of the MDF to the center of the edges cut in their length by drawing the lines.

  6. Place the side next to the letter, and position to the center line. Using the steel brackets screw into position.
  7. Repeat around the whole letterSource : deco.fr
  8. Use wood glue to secure the side corners together
  9. Turn the letter over and sand down any rough edges
  10. Paint the front of the letter in your chosen colour
  11. At the back insert the light bulbs

  12. Use left over MDF pieces to place in between the lightbulbs at the back to secure them in position. Use a little wood glue to keep in place.
